If you needed another reason to blame your family you can add ED or erectile dysfunction to the list. Turns out, your genes could be one reason you have trouble keeping an erection, according to a recent survey released by Kaiser Permanente. 

The holidays are getting close so I don’t want to get anyone so pissed off that this comes up as the topic of conversation while dinner rolls are passed over the warmth of a turkey and the coldness of relatives. 

It’s merely to shed some insight on other factors to consider if you are having issues with ED or stamina or both. If you ruled out or shed some pounds, changed up your medications or diet (all under the guidance of your doctor or a medical professional) or eliminated some bad habits then your DNA might be the problem. 

Back to the survey. Kaiser dug a little deeper and actually got a shitton of Americans as in about 37,000 to consent to submitting their medical records for this study. I never questioned why or how they did but it might have something to do with the importance of satisfying your partner.

ED is a big f’in deal for guys. And as you might have guessed those participating that forked over their medical records had either been diagnosed with ED or treated for it. 

Remember how I mentioned shedding some pounds and erections? Well, that was the gene that the study highlighted. In particular, its the gene that has everything to do with getting hard—hard muscles, a hard erection and regulating your weight. 

It wasn’t a big surprise to medical professionals that genes do impact your erections. I mean, they impact whether you end up bald or fighting baldness and resorting to a combover.

However, what was EXCITING news was that scientists and your doctor may know why certains prescription medications such as Viagra have fallen short when it comes to treating ED in those with low testosterone. 

Of the 50% of guys that have ruled out other issues and still suffer from ED, the silver lining is that genetic-based treatments are on the horizon.

jeune-homme-sportif-courseAbout a week ago, I was sitting in my doctor’s office for my annual check-up. You know, the usual poking of needles and rubber-gloved fingers checking for lumps, bumps, and nodules. 

I figured now would be a good time to ask my doctor the question I have no desire to ask my trainer, what can I do to be better in bed? Actually, what exercises should I be doing to make me better in bed.  

Since my doc is pretty out of shape, he told me to ask my trainer. So much for avoiding embarrassment. 

Here is a list of exercises you should be doing to pump up your performance in bed. Fair warning: some of these are really weird and will put you in a very strange position. Literally. 

Kegels.    Most guys have never heard of these but most women have. Basically, kegels are the muscles that keep you from pissing your pants. Now that you know how to mimic this exercise, lay on the floor on your back so that your pelvic floor muscles are engaged. Kegels prevent premature ejaculations and erectile dysfunction. I could go into details about how to do them the right way, but I will just encourage you to watch a Youtube video for the best direction. 

Planks.    You are more-than-likely doing these already or know what they are, but just be sure you work up to holding them for up to 60 seconds. Keeping your body and back straight—keep your abs locked and loaded while in plank position. 

Push-Ups.    Your standard push-ups go a long way in strengthening your upper body which increases your stamina and strength both inside and outside of the bedroom. 

Bridges.    Another exercise you have likely seen women doing at the gym. Visually, it looks like you are practicing thrusts. Similar to kegels, you lay down flat on your back with your knees slightly bent and hip distance apart. Then, get to thrusting. Feel the burn in your hamstrings and glutes. 

My trainer would highly recommend all of these exercises but I wouldn’t recommend doing the kegels or bridges in public or at the gym. Seriously, you will look like a perv.

Turns out, a healthy diet is not just good for your sex drive but is a turn-on for women. The study, conducted by the Department of Psychology Macquarie University in Australia used something called, The skin spectrophotometry measure (CIELab b*) to test what you smelled like based on what you eat.

Basically, you are what you eat and whatever you are eating is seeping out of your pores whether you’re sweating it out in the office, gym or bedroom. Turns out, when guys eat a shit ton of fruits and veggies it leads to pleasant-smelling sweat when compared to guys that chow down on doughy and carb-loaded foods such as lots of bread and pasta.

The male study participants were asked to fork over information about their diets and some sweat—freshly wicked. The guys with the healthier diets had sweat that was described as more floral, seat and even….fruity smelling. Again, this is feedback from women. Guys that also ate meat, egg and other protein sources were part of the better-fragrant group as well. The more carbs you take in, the more guys will stink to women. The study did fail to elaborate on what women thought the carb-eater sweat actually smelled like but you could always ask—or not.

And before you decide to opt out of garlic, it’s your breath that gets it the worst, not your sweat. Wanna smell your best?

-Dark, green leafy veggies such as spinach or romaine lettuce (kale if you can stand it), beets and eggplants
