How I Dropped 35 Pounds And Got Off Blood Pressure Pills

How I Dropped 35 Pounds And Got Off Blood Pressure Pills

I remember when my t-shirts started getting tighter before I noticed the struggle to button my dress pants.

I mean, dress pants can be uncomfortable but t-shirts? Plus, I had had my annual physical complete with some blood drawn and a jog on a treadmill. Admittedly, I have fallen off the workout wagon at least on a consistent basis over the past three years.

Needless to say, I did a good job of paying attention to my craft beers before paying attention to what the scale said. In fact, I never step on the scale and I’m always confused at the pains that girlfriend goes through to weigh herself. You know, first thing in the morning in the buff and only after she spent some time in the bathroom.

I can’t say I was entirely shocked to see the needle move up thirty-five pounds since I last weighed myself which was over two years ago at this same doctor’s office.

My doctor is a no-nonsense kind of guy and gave it to me straight—I had gotten fat and now needed high-blood pressure medication. And, if I didn’t do something about it I would end up on more medications to treat other maladies like diabetes. He gave me the news and was not about to sugarcoat it—I was fat and needed to do something about it.

My girlfriend has been on some low-carb diet for as long as I can remember and never forced me to skip out on portions of pasta or desserts or even the crappy fast food I ate. So, she encouraged me to ditch the carbs and processed shit.

The problem for me was I needed something drastic that didn’t allow any type of alcohol in my diet which is why I turned to The Whole 30 Diet this past January. I am a bit of a do or die resolution kind of guy and January was the perfect month to be in misery with fellow dieters. Plus, The Whole 30 Diet is healthy and almost a bit of a dare…..can you give up alcohol, processed foods, sugars or anything that is quick to make?

I am not much of a cook but I was able to rise to the challenge after buying a The Whole 30 Cookbook. I followed every recipe to a “T” because you have to…most of crap in our foods are hidden in sauces including soy and gluten. By the way, soy is in quite a bit of everything in the condiments section of your fridge.

After following this admittedly strict diet, I dropped fifteen pounds in my first month which helped me build momentum and allowed my t-shirts to fit again. But, I also realized diet would not be enough, I had to exercise. I don’t like the gym so I brought the gym to me. I decided to plunk down the money and get a Peloton.

Yes, a Peloton is expensive, but it’s still cheaper than a personal trainer and you don’t have to drive anywhere. The schedule of live classes also means that I can sign up just like I would at the gym. The app also makes it worth it with treadmill challenges although I refuse to spend the money on their treadmill after buying a spin bike.

Three-plus months later and I’ve dropped 35 pounds and dropped my blood pressure pills. My belly is no longer filling the space of t-shirts to full capacity and my dress pants require a belt.

My biggest takeaway is that you have to face the fact that you are fat and not sugarcoat it, find a diet that is something that is reasonable and something you can do on an ongoing basis and also easy to understand and an exercise routine that is sustainable.

The Best Low-Carb Craft Beers to Keep and Maintain those Six Pack Abs

The Best Tasting and Low-Carb Craft Beers to Keep and Maintain those Six Pack Abs

The old adage that abs are made in the kitchen is very true according to the trainer that I just hired. I’m currently working on my getting rid of the dad bod that I worked hard to form over the winter drinking beer and blowing off the gym.

I eat pretty healthily but my caloric nemesis is the craft beers that I love the hell out of. Naturally, my trainer suggested that I give up beer entirely until I got to my goal weight but I am not going to give up beer for life.

Before starting my rigorous routine the following week, I decided that I should figure out a game plan for my beer. After testing several beers I compiled a list of the lowest-calorie beers that don’t taste like garden hose water was the main ingredient.

Here is a list of the best tasting craft beers that are low-carb and lower in calories. You can thank me later.

New Belgium Glütiny Pale Ale

At just 150 calories and 10 grams of carbs, it’s hard to believe that you’re drinking a craft brew. Lots of flavors and it doesn’t taste too light. Most of the gluten has been removed so that your gluten-free friends can have one as well. I was also able to find it at restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings and it’s currently only available in the bottle. Just be aware that the ABV is 6 percent and with its smooth taste you might just grab a buzz.

Founders Brewing Company’s All Day IPA

The lively hops will make you hoppy but you will really make you excited is that its only 140 calories. Plus, if you are really into New-England style IPAs, you should be drinking this whether you care about carbs or not. It was one of my favorites because it wasn’t too bitter and you won’t get hammered with an ABV of 4.7.

Left Hand Brewing’s Saison au Ble de Minuit

I am not a huge fan of stouts but if you are feeling one this will cut down your caloric intake quite a bit. At 199 calories and an ABV of 6.8 percent you will still get the alcohol you like in a stout but with at least 100 calories or less.

Allagash Brewing Company’s Allagash White

I have been a super fan of this beer and was shit happy when I found out it only had 159 calories and an ABV of 5.1 percent. Drinks like a light wheat beer with plenty of creamy flavor—no orange needed. This wheat will become your new favorite beach beer this summer.

Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner

This solid but light pilsner is only 160 calories and has an ABV at 5.3 percent. This beer is perfectly balanced with hints of grapefruit, a touch of hop and even some spice. The mermaid on the can will also make you not want to use a koozie.

Sweetwater Brewing’s 429 Extra Pale Ale

I used to drink the hell out of this West Coast-style beer when I lived in Atlanta and it’s still as good as I remember. The centennial hops coupled with grapefruit is so delicious that you will have a hard time believing it’s only 168 calories. Oh, and an ABV of 5.7 percent means you can handle it.

Cheers!

High-Fat Diets May Lead to Weight Gain Not Loss Says New Study

scale-diet-fat-health-53404.jpg

If you have been busting your ass at the gym and sticking to that Keto diet and not losing weight or rather gaining, it might be the diet and not you, according a new study.

I know, I know it sucks to hear this shocking news but before you change up your diet (and always consult with your physician before starting or stopping a new diet or exercise plan) here is the skinny on this study.

It was conducted by the University of Aberdeen and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The two learning institutions joined forces and tried out the results on 30 mice—giving one group lots of fat and very little carbs and the other group little-to-no fact and low carbs as well.

Turns out, fat just might make you fat suggests the study. The group of mice that got lots of fat actually gained weight while the group of mice that had very little or zero fat and a low-carb diet maintained their rodent figures and gained no weight.

This doesn’t mean you should shovel in the sugar or blow off healthy eating. Instead, be mindful of the amount of fat in your diet and stick to a healthy low-carb diet.

In fact, many of the foods that are better for boosting your health AND YOUR SEX DRIVE contain a minimal amount of fat or rather contain the kind of good fats that our bodies need. Hint: it’s not the kind of fat in bacon.

So, have the burger but go lean on the fat.

Scent of a Woman: Guys Smell Like What They Eat According to Study

Scent of a Woman: Guys Smell Like What They Eat According to Study

Put down that cheeseburger and turn off the Xbox. A new study found that what a guy eats may actually change his smell and make him more attractive to the opposite sex.

Turns out, a healthy diet is not just good for your sex drive but is a turn-on for women. The study, conducted by the Department of Psychology Macquarie University in Australia used something called, The skin spectrophotometry measure (CIELab b*) to test what you smelled like based on what you eat.

Basically, you are what you eat and whatever you are eating is seeping out of your pores whether you’re sweating it out in the office, gym or bedroom. Turns out, when guys eat a shit ton of fruits and veggies it leads to pleasant-smelling sweat when compared to guys that chow down on doughy and carb-loaded foods such as lots of bread and pasta.

The male study participants were asked to fork over information about their diets and some sweat—freshly wicked. The guys with the healthier diets had sweat that was described as more floral, seat and even….fruity smelling. Again, this is feedback from women. Guys that also ate meat, egg and other protein sources were part of the better-fragrant group as well. The more carbs you take in, the more guys will stink to women. The study did fail to elaborate on what women thought the carb-eater sweat actually smelled like but you could always ask—or not.

And before you decide to opt out of garlic, it’s your breath that gets it the worst, not your sweat. Wanna smell your best?

Here is a list of recommended foods to add to your daily diet to make your sweat smell sweet:

-Dark, green leafy veggies such as spinach or romaine lettuce (kale if you can stand it), beets and eggplants

-Fruits high in antioxidants such as blueberries, pomegranates, strawberries, oranges, cherries

-Lean proteins such as fish and chicken

And avoid asparagus if you want to keep your urine from smelling. Well, only if you’re not into that kind of thing.

7 Foods to Kick your Metabolism into Shape

Summer bod looking a little lumpier than usual? Do you wish you could have rock hard abs? If you want a six-pack you will want to step away from drinking that six-pack. In fact, 75% of your weight loss goals are going to depend on what you eat.

Here is a list of 7 foods that will kick your metabolism’s ass and give you the body of her dreams.

Meats and Lean Proteins

Before you pump iron, you need iron in your system. Lean meats such as chicken and fish combat any deficiencies and allow you to burn more calories. Dietary experts recommend at least three servings of iron-rich foods.

Water

Not only does a lack of water make you feel like lifting a paperclip is an effort, but it can also slow down your metabolism. Give your body a boost and drink a tall glass of cold water. Cold water is best because it jolts your body into warming up—hence burning more calories.

Eggs

Not just any eggs, but egg whites are especially beneficial in giving your body the amino acids it needs to bust out the extra pounds your body is hanging onto. Egg white omelet, anyone?

Coffee

Skip the decaf and go for the real stuff. Several studies have pointed to an increased metabolism in caffeinated coffee drinkers up to 16 percent when compared to those that drank decaf. Perhaps, decaf coffee is really covfefe.

Chili peppers

You may remember one of our prior blogs on boosting your libido. Turns out, chili peppers also boosting your metabolism. A dash of chopped chili peppers adds vitamin c and capsaicin to your diet.

Milk

Got milk? All kidding aside, downing a glass of milk or a beverage rich in calcium breaks down the fats in your body.

Whole Grains

A diet rich in whole grains makes your body work harder to break it down. If you are not a fan of oatmeal you can also eat brown rice or whole grain bread. Skip the starchy carbs.
